What is ED?

ED or Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence) is a male sexual disorder, during which a man is unable to reach or maintain a hard erection for a successful sexual activity. In USA, 15 up to 20 million men are estimated to suffer from some degree of ED: mild, moderate or severe.

In general, approximately 50% of men between 40 and 70 years suffer from erection problems. But ED is not directly associated with age, because young males can be affected too.

Around 50% men with diabetes suffer from ED.

What is Viagra?

Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is an oral drug for Erectile Dysfunction treatment. In 1998, Viagra became the first in its class medication for this condition, and since then it has helped over 20 million people worldwide regain a healthy and happy sex life.

Viagra is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc in a tablet form and comes in three doses: 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. Viagra contains sildenafil citrate as an active substance. This substance acts by improving blood flow to the pelvic area.

Film-coated Viagra tablets are diamond-shaped and blue-colored.

Sildenafil helps achieve and maintain an erection in already 30-60 minutes after intake. The tablet only works if you are sexually stimulated. Viagra effects remain in the body for up to 4 hours.

During clinical trials, sildenafil citrate demonstrated its effectiveness in 78% of males, including those, diagnosed with diabetes, prostatitis, high blood pressure, and atherosclerosis.

How does Viagra work?

To understand how Viagra works, it is important to understand how an erection occurs. The blood vessels in the penis open up when a man is sexually aroused. The blood can quickly flow into the penis and create a pressure in blood vessels, so that blood cannot flow out again. This creates an erection.

Erectile Dysfunction develops in case of insufficient blood flow to the penis, due to certain diseases, for example diabetes or prostatitis. Viagra works by relaxing muscles in penile blood vessels.

How to take Viagra?

Sildenafil citrate comes in three doses: 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg. Initially, you are advised to start with the lowest dose (25 mg) and then increase the strength if it is not effective for you.

You can only take a single tablet per day. For best effects, it is recommended to take Viagra on an empty stomach approx. 30 minutes prior to sexual intercourse.

Do not take Viagra (sildenafil citrate) with more than 5 glasses of alcohol.

What are side effects?

Side effects, associated with generic Viagra, are only experienced by 2% of males. The most common side effects that occur are flushing, headaches, stuffy nose and stomach discomfort after meals. They usually disappear after a few hours. If you take Viagra a few times, the body gets used to the medication, and side effects disappear by themselves.

If you experience any side effects that persist or seem uncomfortable, you need to consult your doctor.

You must also be aware that Viagra should not be taken with other medicines that contain nitrates (for example, Nitroglycerin).
